Keep your eyes on God…

The Bible teacher that led me to the Lord back in 1982… in one of our many conversations left this bit of wisdom stamped on my heart, “Keep your eyes on God. Man will always disappoint you, but God never will.” That stamp has never faded (Albeit, the man does not remember any particular conversation we had). The focus of my blog is not about politics. It’s about how God works in our lives to bring about transformation. Transformation is what we need… to be more like Jesus. And there’s more to that, but it’s a topic for another day.

In today’s religious, social and political climate it has become ever so crucial to keep our eyes on God. Listening to the current administration attempting to overthrow the 2020 election results – it – truly sounds like an attempt at a coup de tat.. it’s extremely disturbing – to say the least. It sounds more like a trailer for a box office hit. Still, details and facts are not as relevant as much as just the mere thought, the possibility – that a fellow American (and one in power) would feel so empowered / so entitled that he is compelled to challenge not just the election results, but the American populace that participated in that election. We hear about stuff like that happening in other countries, but I never imagined even the possibility of such a thing taking place in my country. And not just because, one side claims the other side rigged the presidential election. But, because the losing side now wants to null and void the results because the exiting leader claims he should have won – may in fact believe that he won. Seriously, if one side went to the trouble to rig an election, why would it only affect one race? It makes more sense that if one race was rigged the entire election was compromised. And all election results would be null and void. The whole scenario sounds like something right out of the Twilight Zone. Could this be the beginnings of a year – a hundred times – worse than 2020? hmm…

Well, I want to share something. It too may sound like something out of the Twilight Zone. You be the judge. The other night, as I lay in bed, I was reminded of something the Lord showed me back on October 7, 2020. At the time, it was so compelling I had to jot it down, so I wrote myself a note on my phone, but I had forgotten about it. Anyway, I had been praying fervently all year asking God for mercy for a rebellious people. Yup. That’s us – the church. The current administration had created an emotional upheaval – a mess of dissension and division.

America has a well recorded history of inequalities, “discrimination” and all sorts of other inequities. Nevertheless, prosperity was not and has not been beyond reach for the marginalized. I’ve heard many “rags to riches” stories from my own. And then there was always the spirit of tokenism, which all but a few sincerely believe has completely disappeared. Since the days of my youth, the goal has been to equalize the American people. It has not been an easy task. Education was supposed to be the great equalizer. Well, nevertheless, as someone born into the world of inequity I doubt I will see a day when we are all equal in the eyes of man. Yes. In the eyes of man. This exiting administration has convinced me that that day will probably never come to pass. And though the Apostle Paul said in God’s kingdom there is neither Greek nor Jew, male or female, that we are all equal in the eyes of God – no Christian in this world has lived, or lives up to that credence. Any good that may have come from the current administration is quickly overshadowed by the gross mishandling of what Americans most value… American democracy.

I hold to the opinion that most Americans have a healthy distrust of government. Generally, it’s nothing too alarming. If we don’t like the guy in office, we wait for the next round of elections and try to get someone better in office, or so we try. I don’t care for the two-party system but it seems that too is the will of the American people. Come on. When was the last time any other party was elected to office? It’s not like other parties don’t run for all these high offices. I guess that old adage, “follow the money” still reigns. How we wish that was not the case. Oh well.

More distressing for me to witness – was the evangelical allegiance to a man of dissension – from well known pastors, preachers, celebrity pastors – notwithstanding that most of which were labeled prosperity teachers. They all jumped into the abyss of conspiracy theories and prophetic warnings. It is sufficient to say that such things would breed a variety of paranoid delusions. And that’s not to make light of Biblical prophesy.

In 2020, it surely appeared that all hell had broken loose on American society. And to see some of my favorite pastors bow down to any secular leader was just too difficult to digest. Worse was hearing that a female prosperity teacher was the leader’s spiritual guru. I had this image of Eve presenting Adam with the fruit from the forbidden tree and saying to Adam, “Go ahead! God is with us.” I see and hear proud Christian conservatives name calling and bullying anyone that holds a different belief. What the heck! Now imagine me, a Christian woman, 60 y/o, Hispanic, unemployed, uninsured watching events unfold from my living room. It just sent chills down my spine.

It was not the constant news of COVID-19, or its statistics. It was not having to go on lockdown, wearing a mask, six foot distancing, or any other mandates related to COVID-19. It was not any crisis that made me tremble. What did make me shudder was watching the people of God gather en masse to pray in the public square. They gathered to condemn a people. Wow! All I could picture was Jesus warning us, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. ” “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward (Matthew).”

I pictured Jesus standing beside Pilate and the Jews choosing to save a criminal over the Son of God.

Yes. I was reminded of the people that crucified Jesus. Yes. It was God’s own people that crucified His Son (Luke 23).

Then I was reminded of King Saul who tried to kill the incoming King David.

And God asked Samuel Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons. And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me. But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”

I Samuel 16:1-3

Do you know what GOP stands for? … God’s Own People… Yup!

What did the Lord show me on October 7, 2020? Biden will win the election. But Trump followers will continue the war. And that’s what seems to be happening. Who is it that continues to indulge this conspiracy of election fraud? When an American can say boldly… “The largest standing army in the world are American Gun Owners. We own the majority of weapons and ammo of the world totals. We are here if he needs us.” Seems this particular individual was not asking for proof of any wrongdoing.

Our battles are not against flesh and blood. There is a second part to this message from October 7, 2020, but it is much too unsettling to mention, at least not today. And should it come to pass, anyone and everyone that professes to be a Christian better put on their big boy / big girl pants. God is so good. He never gives us more than we can handle. As Scripture says in Matthew…

We have to remember that Scripture says only five virgins were prepared.

Of the ten lepers that Jesus healed… “One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.”

And let’s not forget that … “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

More later…
