While several school districts have already begun the new school year, my grand-kids go back to school tomorrow. For me, it’s always bittersweet. I love having them home, but they get bored easily. It becomes a matter of keeping them entertained. And it never fails, everyday “Can we go to McDonald’s?” Sweet though, in that I can rest from having to entertain them and focus on projects that also require a lot of time and have time to study God’s word.
Sending the kids off to school tends to remind me of how the world has become a dangerous place for them. My husband reminisces on his childhood when he was able to wander the woods, stay out until dusk, walk to places by himself – stay home alone. I too remember my girls staying out until dusk, playing with friends, riding bikes, rollerskating – and rarely did I take them out to get fast food. Then I tell my husband that those days have been long gone.
I imagine there’s a few places in this society of ours – to raise children where we don’t have to worry about them every moment. Of course watching certain movies makes me doubt that possibility. Nevertheless, location alone does not keep our children safe.
There are spiritual forces at work, even though we can see it, hear it, feel it or believe it.
1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
John 10:10 ” The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…”
Danger is every where, because our enemy knows no rest. When kids are at school they become easy targets. As parents-grandparents, we should be praying for our children every time they walk out the door, get on the school bus, attend school activities and such. We should always pray for our children. We may not recognize the enemy, but God knows him too well. And He is prepared to protect His children. We need to trust God for the safety of our children. We need to rest on the promises of God. We need to be on guard. We need to pray for our children.
1 Peter 1:13 (NKJV) “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ…”
Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV) “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
John 16:33 (NKJV) “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Hebrews 2:14 (NKJV) “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,…”
Prayers for a safe school year for our children.
